Gemcan delivered the comprehensive South Ward Upgrade at Peter James Centre, transforming the 30-bed acute aged mental health unit into a modern, safe, and highly functional facility. The works involved complex partial demolition and refurbishment, including expanded lounges and dining areas, upgraded staff bases, additional meeting rooms, and enhanced central storage.
Technical expertise was critical in creating a new Intensive Care Area (ICA) and converting three double rooms into six flexible single bedrooms with swing-bed functionality. Gemcan also delivered decked courtyards and external terraces to support resident activity, interaction, and wellbeing. All fixtures and fittings were upgraded to anti-ligature standards, requiring meticulous planning and precision installation.
The redesign enabled South Ward to operate as three distinct functional clusters – Gender Sensitive Area, General Ward, and Intensive Care Area – enhancing privacy, observation, and care delivery. Gemcan’s meticulous coordination of construction, refurbishment, and specialised safety requirements highlights its capability to deliver complex, sensitive healthcare environments.
