Gemcan was engaged as the principal contractor to deliver a purpose-built Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) residence in Thornbury. Designed to provide safe, accessible, and comfortable living for individuals with disabilities, the single-storey home features four bedrooms, therapeutic and living spaces, a modern kitchen and dining area, staff facilities, and dedicated sleepover accommodation.

Our scope included the delivery of key features that define high-quality SDA housing, ensuring the residence meets both compliance standards and the everyday needs of its future occupants. This included fully accessible floor layouts with wide corridors and doorways, reinforced walls for the installation of assistive technology, step-free access throughout, and carefully planned bathroom and kitchen facilities to maximise independence and ease of use. Safety and comfort were central to the build, with integrated fire protection systems, climate control, and provisions for staff support and overnight accommodation. Every element was constructed to align with the NDIS Specialist Disability Accommodation design standards, creating a home that is both functional and welcoming.
